Where was I?

Sorry I haven't posted for a while; been super busy.  Interesting how life does that sometimes isn't it?
You can go for ages having everything under control and then boom, it all turns upside down.
Well that's what happened to me anyway.
We had a major storm and the ceiling in my office literally fell in.  Still isn't mended properly and I keep praying it won't rain too much; worried that more of the roof might give way.  What an extraordinary thing to have happen. 
Next thing one of my family had a car accident and suffered severe injuries to her neck and arms.  Just when you think things are getting back to normal, I slipped on a wet deck and hurt my back and leg.
As I said, that's the way things go sometimes.  Hoping no more surprises like that are headed my way.  Could do with a few good surprises but then I guess there are a lot of you out there who know exactly what I mean. 
I'll tell you what I have come across though, a Facebook page which was showing some of the things that the Chinese have been doing to little animals.  Can't believe people can be so very heartless.

I think I was so intrigued with all the articles because of everything that has been going on in my own life.  Reading about some of the things going on in the world begins to put everything in perspective doesn't it?
Anyway, hope to be back under full steam shortly.  But just wanted to say I haven't forgotten you, simply got a little sidetracked.  As the expression goes, "Life got in the way."

Chia Seeds - Again

Well I never heard from any of you about how to use Chia seeds so after a little research I'll tell you what I found out.
You can grow your own plants; you can get a book telling you how to do this; you can get recipes.
The most interesting piece of information I found was that if you take a tablespoon of Chia seeds then drink a glass of water ten minutes before food you will not only eat less but it will slow down the absorption of carbohydrates.

Apparently Chia seed are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet and have been around for years.  They can heal what's wrong with you and delay ageing; sounds great to me:)
So how come I didn't know all this years ago?

Something New

I'm going to try something new to see if it's of any use to you guys.  What I'm doing is sorting out a new page with some 'red hot deals.'  I'm just in the process of getting the "hot deals" together: really want to make it worth your while.

Well we all made it through Easter for yet another year and surprise, surprise I had very little change in my weight.  I just love chocolate but over the years I've taught myself to like the really dark chocolate as opposed to the sweet milky variety.  The dark chocolate is actually quite good for you so long as you don't over do it:)  When I was a kid, my mother always ate dark chocolate and I really hated it; all I wanted was the sugary sweet stuff.  How she would be so surpised at me now!
Anyway, I must get on with these special deals so I'll talk to you soon.

Almost Easter

Well here we are with Easter looming; I soooo love the Easter break.  Just getting into Autumn but still very warm.  Don't really think I have a favourite season as each one brings something special.  Mind you, having said that I must admit I'm always pleased to have Spring make an appearance as after a few months of Winter I begin to get to the stage of enough's, enough if you know what I mean.
Haven't bought any Easter eggs yet and suddenly realise I'm running out of time, it doesn't really matter though as Easter isn't actually about chocolate and buns.
I have been so busy today with a builder inspecting a hole in my ceiling.  Yes...we had so much rain recently my ceiling caved in; this particular room is situated under a deck and the builder now tells me that the original builder didn't do a very good job.  Huh....you tell me now!
I guess somehow someone will sort it out but I can tell you now, it won't be me.  Good job I have a husband and son who are good at repairing things.
Hope life is treating all you guys better; I tell you, when the ceiling fell in it brought a whole new meaning to Chicken Licken crying out to everyone that the sky was falling.

What do YOU do?

Just been thinking....  what do YOU do when you seem stuck in a rut and every day seems like 'Groundhog' day?
I have been finding that every day is becoming just the same as the last and I'm desperate to see some changes.  My weight has not budged for ages even though I seem to be doing all the right things and I'm getting really fed up with feeling such an overweight slob!
When I mentioned that to someone recently, they seemed amazed that I should be feeling that way until I realised I was talking to someone who was stuck in almost exactly the same rut:)  I guess when you think about it, everything is relative isn't it?  I might think I'm fat but compared to another person I may appear quite ok; I might think my life is crap but compared to the next person it might be not too bad. What it really comes down to is how we feel about ourself that matters.
I read this recently and I'd like to share it with you guys.

"You have absolute control over but one thing and that is your thoughts.
This is the most significant and inspiring of all facts know to man!
This is the sole means by which you may control your own destiny.
If you fail to control your mind.......you may be sure you will control nothing else."

Says it all doesn't it?  Have you read the little book "As a Man Thinketh?"  It says much the same sort of thing.  Basically we are what we think.  The way I see it is if you imagine your mind as a garden then when you think good thoughts you'll grow something good and wholesome, but if you think negative or bad thoughts your mind will only produce weeds.

Is There Anybody There????

Hey......is anybody out there?  I'm still wanting to find out different ways of using my Chia seeds and nobody appears to have any ideas!  Does that mean that none of you have used them or you just don't want to tell me?
Dr Oz had some made into muffins but when I read his recipe it says it has agarve syrup; I have recently been reading on Dr Mercola that this is as bad for you as Fructose so can anyone suggest another substitute?  My immediate answer would be Stevia but I'd really like to hear from someone who has tried something first hand:)
Let's face it, surely one of you who reads this blog must use Chia seeds and have a few clues?
I'm really looking forward to hearing from someone.

The Amazing Little Kettlebells

Not sure if you guys have all heard about the wonderful little things called Kettlebells?
I've used these myself and with only two exercises (not difficult) they can certainly get you fit and tone your body.  Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper from the "Biggest Loser" program both have DVD's showing exercise routines but what is even better........On the kettlebells weight loss website someone is giving away a FREE video plus an ebook etc.  I have just received this and I can personally say the information is good.  Don't actually know yet if the video is about kettlebells but the rest of the website gives plenty of details regarding exactly what they are.  In case you're interested this is the website : www.kettlebellsforweightloss.com
Anyway, as I was saying I have some of these things and they're really good.  I find them great because you don't have to go to a gym or put on lycra (yuck) and you can just use them anywhere.  But then I'm all for an easy life and if I can find anything to solve some of my problems this easily, then great:)

A Letter from Dr Suzanne

Trudy and Judy were twins.

3 Fat Burning Dessert Recipes

Just thought you'd like a special something for a treat:)




Peanut Butter Ice Cream
1 cup lowfat cottage cheese
1 scoop  Protein Vanilla
2 Tbsp Natural Peanut Butter
1/4 cup Almond Milk
1/4 tsp cinnamon
Blend ingredients together in a blender until a smooth consistency is reached. Pour into a bowl and place in freezer until frozen to an ice cream consistency.
Makes approximately 3 servings.
Nutrition Data per serving:
Calories: 174
Protein: 20 gms
Carbs: 7 gms
Fat: 7 gms
Cinnamon is added because research has shown it to be a very good blood sugar controlling spice. Natural Peanut Butter is full of monounsaturated fat, this can help lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, plus raise HDL (good) cholesterol. If you want a little less peanut butter taste you can use 1 Tbsp of Natural Peanut Butter and it reduces the fat grams by 3 and calories per serving by 24. When the ice cream comes out of the freezer let it sit on the counter for 10 minutes or warm it up slightly. The ice cream will be harder than high sugar, high fat conventional ice cream because it doesn't contain all that excessive sugar and fat.


Peanut Butter Bars

2/3 cup flax meal
2 scoops  Protein Vanilla
4 Tbsp Natural Peanut Butter
1/2 cup Water
Stevia, to taste (approx: 2tsp)
Blend ingredients together in a bowl until it becomes a blob of dough. It will be somewhat sticky. Place the sticky dough into a small casserole or baking pan and smooth out into a flat level surface. Then put in the refrigerator to cool or you can freeze them if you prefer. Once cooled or frozen you can cut them up into bars.
Makes approximately (4) 2in x 4in bars.

If you would like a lower calorie bar and maybe less of a peanut butter taste you can modify the ingredients by using 2.5 scoops of Protein powder, 2 Tbsp natural peanut butter, 1/3 cup of water and 2tsp of Stevia. This will lower the calories per bar by approximately 35 calories, 3 less grams of fat, 1 less gram of carbs and 1 extra gram of protein.
This recipe is also rich not only in natural monounstaturated fats that can help lower total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, plus raise HDL (good) cholesterol, but rich in Omega 3 fats because of the flax meal and Omega 3 fats that flax meal provides. You will consume about 2.5 gms of Omega 3 fats per bar.


 
Vanilla Cinnamon Pudding
2 scoops Protein Vanilla
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp Stevia
Enough water for desired consistency (about 1/4 of a cup)
Blend protein powder, stevia and cinnamon ingredients together in a bowl until it mixed well. Add a little cold water and mix it in. Keep adding a tiny amount of water and mixing well until your pudding reaches the consistency that you desire. Then put in the refrigerator to cool. Once cooled then enjoy!

1. DON’T DIETThe Health Diet isn’t about eating less; it’s about eating more—more nutrient-dense food, to crowd out the empty kilojoules and keep you full all day. That’s important, because restricting food will kill your metabolism. It sends a signal to your body that says, “I’m starving!” Your body responds by slowing your metabolic rate to hold on to existing energy stores. 3. EAT MORE PROTEIN Your body needs protein to maintain lean muscle. In a 2006 article in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers argued that the recommended daily intake of 0.36 grams of protein per half kilo of body weight, is inadequate for anyone doing resistance training and recommend that women get between 0.5 and 1 gram per half kilo of body weight. (If you want to lose weight, use your goal body weight as your guide). Add either 85 g of lean meat, 2 tablespoons of nuts, or 225 g of low-fat yoghurt, to every meal and snack. Plus, research shows that protein can up post-meal kilojoule burn by as much as 35 per cent.
4. GO ORGANIC WHEN YOU CAN Canadian researchers report that dieters with the most organochlorines (pollutants from pesticides, which are stored in fat cells) experience a greater-than-normal dip in metabolism as they lose weight, perhaps because the toxins interfere with the energy-burning process. Of course, it’s not always easy to find—or afford—organic produce. In general, items that you peel—avocado, grapefruit, bananas—are fine. But choose organic when buying celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries and nectarines; they have some of the highest levels of pesticides.
5. GET UP, STAND UP Whether you sit or stand at work may play as big a role in your waistline as your fitness routine. Researchers discovered that inactivity (4 hours or more) causes a near shutdown of an enzyme that controls fat and cholesterol metabolism. To keep this enzyme active and increase fat-burning, break up periods of downtime by standing up—for example, while talking on the phone.
6. DRINK COLD WATER German researchers found that drinking 6 cups of cold water a day (that’s almost 1.5 litres) can raise resting metabolism by about 209 kilojoules daily—enough to shed 2.2 kg in a year, with essentially zero additional effort. The increase may come from the work it takes to heat the water to body temperature.
7. EAT THE HEAT It turns out that capsaicin, the compound that gives chillies their heat, can also fire up your metabolism. Eating about 1 tablespoon of chilli boosts your sympathetic nervous system (responsible for your fight-or-flight response), according to a study published in the Journal of Nutritional Science and Vitaminology. The result: a temporary metabolism spike of about 23 per cent. Stock up on fresh or dried chilli to add to salsa or for tossing into stir-fries.
8. REV UP IN THE MORNING Eating breakfast jump starts your metabolism so it’s no accident that those who skip brekky are 41⁄2 times more likely to be obese. The heartier your first meal is, the better. In one study, volunteers who got 22 to 55 per cent of their total kilojoules at breakfast gained 700 g on average over 4 years. While those who ate zero to 11 per cent gained nearly double.
9. DRINK COFFEE OR TEA Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant, so your daily java can rev your metabolism by 5 to 8 per cent—burning about 410 to 728 kJ a day. A cup of brewed tea can raise your metabolism by 12 per cent, according to one Japanese study.
10. FIGHT FAT WITH FIBRE Research shows that some fibre can fire up your fat burn by as much as 30 per cent. Studies find that those who eat the most fibre gain the least weight over time. Aim for about 25 grams a day—the amount in about three servings each of fruits and vegetables.
11. EAT IRON-RICH FOODS Iron is essential for carrying the oxygen your muscles need to burn fat. Unless you restock your stores, you run the risk of low energy and a sagging metabolism. Shellfish, lean meats, beans, fortified cereals and spinach are excellent sources.
12. GET MORE VITAMIN D Vitamin D is essential for preserving muscle tissue. Get 90 per cent of your recommended daily intake (400 IU) in 100 g of salmon. Other good sources: tuna, fortified milk and cereal and eggs.
13. DRINK MILK There’s some evidence that calcium deficiency, which is common in many women, may slow metabolism. Research shows that consuming calcium through dairy foods such as fat-free milk and low-fat yoghurt may also reduce fat absorption from other foods.
14. EAT WATERMELON The amino acid arginine, abundant in watermelon, might promote weight loss, according to the Journal of Nutrition. In a laboratory study, adding this amino acid to the diet of obese mice enhanced the oxidation of fat and glucose. Snack on watermelon and other arginine sources, such as seafood, nuts and seeds, year-round.
15. STAY HYDRATED All of your body’s chemical reactions, including your metabolism, depend on water. If you are dehydrated, you may be burning up to 2 per cent fewer kilojoules, according to researchers at the University of Utah. Drink at least eight to twelve glasses a day.

Obesity is really NOT our fault!

Don't know if any of you are aware but I have been in this weight loss business for a good number of years now and let's just say you'd think I'd have learnt all there is to know by now:)
Yes, here I am consulting others on their weight when I recently found my own had escalated more than I liked; well I sure didn't like what I saw in the mirror.  What I'm trying to say is that as much as you think you've got it all sussed you can still be caught unawares.  After a great Christmas and New Years my weight seemed to creep on without any effort and so I have now been getting back into my old routine which has always worked.  Thankfully my extra efforts have paid off as those pesky pounds are hitting the trail fast; hope everything is going great for all you guys.
I recently watched a video regarding 'obesity additives.'  This has apparently been studied by many scientists and they reckon they've proved that amongst all the other rubbish that is being added to our food these days it has now actually been found that there is also something being added that makes us hungry and want to eat more. Surprise surprise! Are any of us really surprised by that one?  But wait for this.....it's also being added into what we all know as 'diet foods.'
I'll get my hands on more info and post it here shortly, so as they say....stay tuned folks.

Weight Loss Expert Loses 27kg.

Having trouble slimming down? Then use our tips to help you shed a few kilos.


We procrastinate, promise ourselves we’ll lose weight and get fit but then put it off for another day because we are just too busy.
Weight loss expert Vickie Cummings shed 27kg and kept if off by educating herself about healthy food, sticking to her 10 principles and ditching the faddy diets.
The Australian healthcare worker shares her philosophy in Diet Tips for Busy Chicks.

1. Commit to change

Unless you start to take charge of your life, you will never get rid of that unwanted fat — remember, a little can change a lot.

2. Know your approximate daily energy requirements

If your daily energy intake exceeds your body’s daily requirements, it will store the excess as fat. Likewise, if your energy intake is too low, your body will slow your metabolism and store the unburned calories as fat.
3. Know where your excess calories are coming from
High-calorie processed foods and alcohol tend to make up a major part of our modern diet. My daily intake is made up of 55 per cent whole carbohydrates, 20 per cent fat, 10 per cent refined carbohydrates and 15 per cent protein.
4. Reduce your daily intake by 500 to 1000 calories
Just making one small change each day can mean a calorie reduction of at least 500 to 1000, which should result in a loss of half to one kilogram of unwanted fat per week (that’s one or two tubs of butter — a lot of fat off the hips!).

5. Don’t ban foods or food groups

I enjoy a mainly plant-based diet, but I still love my treats. The key is to enjoy them in moderation. Don’t start and stop restrictive diets that ban or heavily reduce whole food groups because once you return to normal eating or old eating habits when ‘the diet is over’ the weight will return, and you could find your body fat percentage is higher than before.
6. Enjoy plant-based meals at least two or three times a week
There is mounting evidence to support long-term fat loss and health benefits based on plant-based nutrition.
7. Focus on fibre
Making plant-based foods the mainstay of your diet will ensure a healthy, varied diet that allows for lots of low calorie foods to be eaten, with some of the calories speeding weight loss.
8. Move more
We’re moving less than ever. Increase your activity to decrease your unwanted fat.
9. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas
We all know that drinking water is beneficial but we tend to overlook this fact. Good food and plenty of water are the perfect prescription for a lean, healthy body.

10. Don’t be a slave to the bathroom scales

Weight alone can be misleading. Busy chicks who are scale-watchers can be sent into an absolute frenzy, despite the fact normal fluctuations in body composition can take place many times throughout the day. For true validation of your weight loss and healthy lifestyle changes, take body measurements and keep watch of how loose your clothes are becoming and how different you look when you see yourself in the mirror.

    That Dreaded Eight Letter Word.

    Well I'm sure I don't actually have to spell it out for anyone to guess just what that word might be? It's the one thing that for the really overweight, instills dread into their very heart; yes we all know that hideous feeling when someone mentions the word 'exercise.'  Why is it that we tend to loathe the thought of actually beginning some form of get fit routine?  I think it's because the larger we grow the harder it becomes to move our body.  Daily we feel more and more tired, probably because we're not getting a really restful sleep and all in all it's just so much easier to not get started than to go through the effort that is required.
    Being one of the overweight population I have been investigating this dilemma closely and have come to the conclusion that although I hate moving my body, if I want to get rid of my excess weight then I really have no option but to get started, so here goes.
    I am beginning by taking short walks with my dog each morning; the one advantage I have here is that my dog is quite old so she doesn't want to walk too far or too fast.  Both these things suit me perfectly the way I am feeling at present and logically thinking I know things can only get better:)
    So.......that's where I'm at, how about the rest of you?  What is your exercise program?  Do you have one?  Have you actually got out from behind your computer or up off the couch yet?  Believe me I know how hard it is to begin anything new.
    I have decided to walk daily and extend the distance gradually.  It doesn't really matter if you can't get past the end of your driveway, from my understanding it's all about getting started.  Once my walking is stonger and longer I shall have another go with my kettlebells.  Haven't touched them for a while which is really stupid as the exercises are so effective and really quite easy. I'm convinced it really is a mindset thing.  We convince ourselves it's all too hard so we settle into our familiar routine for yet another day.  So tell me, what's it going to take you to get moving?

    The Importance of Weight Loss in Heart Disease

    The first thing you must understand is that the health of your heart is core to your wellbeing. Your heart can develop disease through any number of incorrect lifestyle choices which can include smoking, too much alcohol, the using of drugs, lack of exercise or simply eating the wrong foods. Don't ever underestimate the effect weight loss and exercise can have on heart disease.
    When the average person hears the words heart disease they generally think of someone having a coronary heart attack as most of us have come across this at some time in our lives. Heart disease actually covers many more conditions. Just a couple of these are congestive heart failure and the condition known as an enlarged heart which sounds extremely scary to anyone and must surely be something to be avoided at all costs. So what are the details of these conditions and how can we avoid them?
    Let's begin with the enlarged heart which is not actually a disease in itself but a physical condition that can cover a variety of diseases and conditions and until these are brought under control your life may well be in jeopardy. There are a number of things that can contribute to this condition: alcoholism, obesity, thyroid function, high blood pressure, anaemia, heart valve problems or even on occasion, pregnancy can instigate this problem. To assist with getting this condition under control some major factors are to lose excess weight, cut alcohol, stop smoking and begin excercising. If these details are put into place you have much less chance of having to live your life supported by enormous amounts of medication.
    So what about congestive heart failure? The symptoms of this condition can also be varied and can consist of shortness of breath on exertion and when endeavouring to lie flat. Fatigue, weight gain due to holding excess fluid in your body, swollen legs and high blood pressure. To get this condition under control you may have to lower your salt and fluid intake and it is important for the person diagnosed with CHF to learn to read labels. It is amazing just how much extra sodium can be consumed through eating processed foods. Aerobic exercises are also recommended as this assists with getting your heart back into a healthy condition.
    Everyone should be eating and exercising for optimum health to reduce the risk of getting these conditions and actually shortening ones life span. A heart healthy plan is a sensible way to attack these conditions before they become apparent. The two major factors in your heart healthy plan are to eat sensibly and to exercise until you sweat as both these changes will assist in lowering your blood pressure.
    Endeavour to walk at least thirty minutes every day or use an elliptical trainer for cardio health; be gentle on your joints if you're unused to exercising. The next thing is to build strength which works your muscles including your heart. One of the easiest and most effective way to do weight training is by using Kettlebells. Some people have never heard of these little pieces of magic but they are rapidly becoming popular with anyone who wishes to reduce weight and tone their body easily in the privacy of their own home.
    You can seriously reduce the risk of developing any form of heart disease by watching what you eat. To follow a simple eating plan which is aimed at eating pure healthy foods you will certainly be doing your heart a favour. This involves less salt, plenty of fruit and vegetables, meat, chicken and fish and plenty of fibre. It really is not that difficult to get your body in top condition.

    Get a plan, know what you have to do, stick to it, and see it
    through. That way, no wasted time wandering around the gym deciding
    where to start and no distractions either...

    3) Not changing your workout after 4 weeks - is # 3.
    To be honest, if your workout plan has not worked to help you lose
    fat then it is time to start over. If it hasn't worked yet, why do
    you think it's magically going to start now? Change your work out

    You'll get more results and you'll have more fun!

    4) Not realizing your results will come from eating the right fat burning foods

    I get emails everyday from readers asking if they can add even more
    exercise, cardio and more lifting to their current workout plans. After all,

    You can't keep adding more and more exercise.
    First, there is diminishing returns from
    each additional set you do, and from extra cardio. Second, your
    body can breakdown fast from too much work, particularly when you
    are dieting. Overtraining and low calories go together like oil and
    water. Neither of these combos will make your fat burning machine do its job to burn fat.
    Stick to high quality nutrition, and high-quality fat burning exercises.
    The only thing that matters is your fat loss results.
    Not muscle soreness, not feeling exhausted after each workout,
    and not feeling deprived of food because you are starving yourself.
